Among the different heating systems for homes, we find underfloor heating. Underfloor heating stands out for the homogeneity in the distribution of temperature throughout the house. Furthermore, as they are hidden, they free the walls from the space occupied by traditional radiators.

Advantages of underfloor heating

Underfloor heating systems use the floor of the house as a heat source. Pipes are installed underneath the floor, which heat up and transmit the energy throughout the house. These are some of the advantages that this energy model offers us:

  • Invisibility

As it does not occupy physical space on the walls, it does not limit the placement of furniture or decorative elements.

  • Energy efficiency

The heat is distributed from the bottom to the top. The energy needed to heat a floor is much less than that used to heat a whole house. The lower the energy expenditure, the greater the savings and the lower the carbon dioxide emissions.

Let’s look at the different types of underfloor heating that exist:

Types of underfloor heating

There are two main types of floor heating:

  • Electric radiant floors

This system uses electrical energy. Heat is transmitted to the house through a system of thin pipes under the floor. Insulating elements are placed between the pipes and the finish. This system provides considerable savings on the electricity bill compared to traditional electric heating systems.

  • Water-heated floors

In this case the underfloor pipes will carry water that will be heated by a boiler. Depending on the quality of the materials, the water can be heated to a temperature that balances the heat emission with energy efficiency.

The transmission system is the same as with electric radiant floors, but adds the possibility of cooling the house in times of high temperatures.
